We often hear “a tired dog is a happy dog”, but physical exhaustion and mental calmness are two very different things.
I believe “a calm dog is a happy dog”.
When our dogs know how to be calm, we can live in harmony with our dogs at all time — even when our dogs have just woken up, or when we just come home from work.
A dog who always needs to be exercised is very used to be constantly doing something. He needs the “doing” in order to feel good.
The more we send him to do things that really arouse him in an attempt to tire him out, the more addicted he will become of arousal.
Without calming exercises to balance out the arousal, we will be creating a dog who is always craving for more arousal (and often, not good at handling arousal once it gets too much, kind of like how a child with a candy addiction will become sugar high and out of control as he eats more candies).
Such a dog will always want more. A dog who always wants something but cannot always have what he wants will feel anxious and unfulfilled; while a dog who can relax just “being” can feel really content even when he is doing nothing.
“A tired dog is a happy dog” implies we should always be doing something to tire out our dogs; while “a calm dog is a happy dog” tells us we should strive to creat a calm mental state in our dog in order to give him a balanced and fulfilled life.
